$5 A Day Adsense Site: Case Study – Part 2

Posted on 26. May, 2009 by in Affiliate Marketing Tips, Blogging Tips, Internet Marketing Tips, News, Tutorials

Hi, welcome to part 2 of the $5 Formula Case Study. Before jumping into this part it’s a good idea to read the other parts:

$5 A Day Adsense Site: Case Study – Part 1

$5 A Day Adsense Site: Case Study – Part 2 – This Part

$5 A Day Adsense Site: Case Study – Part 3

$5 A Day Adsense Site: Case Study – Part 4

This case study is based on the absolutely excellent $5 Mini Site Formula by Josh Spaulding and the $5 Formula Video adaptation by Mark Mason.

Deciding Which Keywords Are To Be Used Where

We now have our high paying niche and around 34 decent keywords. We only want 27 in total to start the site so a good next step is to pick out which 27 we are going to use. As the monthly search numbers are all pretty good I am going to use common sense to decide which keywords will fit where starting with a good general keyword as the Main title and domain keyword. I’ll also dump the keywords with a top ten average PageRank of over 3.

Main Index Keyword: Effective Acne Treatment

Site Article Keywords:
1 acne sulfur treatment
2 acne product reviews
3 best acne cream
4 how to clear up acne
5 how to prevent pimples
6 surgery for acne

Articles for Article Marketing:
1 getting rid of acne scars
2 cystic acne cure
3 herbs for acne
4 how to get rid of a pimple
5 how to get rid of acne fast
6 natural cure for acne
7 how to remove pimple
8 pimple home remedy
9 home remedies for blackheads
10 remedy for pimples
11 diet and acne
12 treatment for pimples
13 get rid of zit
14 blackheads home remedies
15 pop a zit
16 get rid of back acne
17 how to get rid of zits
18 zinc for acne
19 home acne cure
20 how to get rid of whiteheads

Choosing A Domain

As the site I am building is aimed at getting visits through Google and Article Marketing it’s not a big deal to get a really catchy domain name. More importantly the main keyword should be in the domain. A quick search of “EffectiveAcneTreatment” shows that the .com and .org is taken. I personally think Google pays more attention to .com’s and .org’s so always go for them.

In this case I always just try and add a short extra word to the end to get a keyword rich domain. So .com and .org EffectiveAcneTreatmentBlog.com is available. So I’ll purchase that.

I always use coupon codes from fatwallet to get my .com domains for $7.69 from GoDaddy.

Setting Up The Site

The formula emphasizes the point to make sure the site looks professional and that the adsense units are effectively placed. Luckily for us, the exact format that Josh has tested are available in excellent and very easy to use adsense themes for wordpress. These adsense themes are also produced by Mark Mason, who made the great video, and very kindly he has given me access to the unreleased v3.0.

I recommend you get the Niche Adsense Themes for these projects as the layouts are proven, you just enter your adsense id in WordPress and you can easily change the header, so hardly any tech knowledge is needed.

snapshot-2009-05-27-22-25-10Niche Adsense Themes For WordPress Options Screen.

So setup is pretty easy. I have an excellent Hostgator reseller account. So I set up a new account for my keyword rich domain, install WordPress using Fantastico (takes 2 mins) and then install Niche Adsense Themes. The whole process takes about 15-20minutes max.

Header and Footer Tweaks

The Niche Adsense Themes already have a great range of headers installed to suit many niches, however I like to put a personal touch on most sites that I create. So I picked a plain header and just did saved them to my desktop for some quick modification.

What do you think?

Getting the Articles…

Ok the last step for this part is to get the articles. We need 6 for the site and 20 for article marketing. For your first site I would advise writing them yourself. However I am a little short of time so I am going to order them…. When some start arriving back I can continue this case study.

The articles you order need to be naturally written without too much keyword stuffing. Ezine Articles only allows the main keyword once every 100 words.

Also the formula says that the exact keyword should appear in the title…. So for example “Diet and Acne, 10 Easy Tips”.

That’s just about it for today. Please let me know your thoughts and any questions so far.

Take  care,

Forest.

I got a new site and I have 5 keywords. Now my question is could I do just fine with forum posting and blog commenting?

English is my second language, I don’t have a talent when it comes to creating a good article for article marketing.

      Hey Paul,

I wouldn’t say it’s impossible however the point of this kind of blog is to leverage the power of article marketing. If you really can’t write them yourself then maybe you can find someone with good english skills and pay them to write for you?

The organic traffic directly to the site does not normally come for a while using this method. Adsense is made by people clicking through from the articles.

  2. Don 28 May 2009 at 9:24 am #

An interesting break down; but would it not be ‘better’ if you published all the articles on your blog (targeting maximum search engine traffic) and then submitted ‘spun’ or ‘rewritten’ articles of the published posts to the article directories? Thus benefiting form targeting links to the post from targeted articles. (think along the lines of LST here).

Looking forward to next week though!

      Hey Don,

It’s certainly tempting to do such things but…… For the case study purposes I am trying to follow this method to the book.

People have asked similar questions on the “Coaching With Josh” forum that I am a memeber off but Josh always recommends that you just try and use Ezine and the other top directories to rank highly for these keywords.

Quite often the power of Ezine will put your article into top 10 with no hassle…. However a blog would need a lot of backlinks to get the terms to rank higly.

      • Don 28 May 2009 at 11:31 am #

I know what you mean Forest what I mean is yes use ezine etc to rank for ‘getting rid of acne scars’ but have that articles links pointing towards ‘getting rid of acne scars’ post.
Therefore the leverage provided by the AD’s is funnelled back to the blog. Thus making it a bigger presence etc.

Ps. grats on the PR jump ;)

        • forest_parks 28 May 2009 at 11:35 am #

          Oh a PR jump!! I didn’t notice :)

The idea is that the reader of the article is more likely to come through if the post is similar in name, the same name may not work as well but…… That may be a great thing to try once this case study is done with….

… Hopefully we can get this site earning a nice $3-$7 a day and then start playing with some other methods.

I like the idea of moving forward with 10 articles and then spinning them for the article marketing and doing exactly what you describe.

Thanks a million for the input.

I like this method of earning online. But would you recommend it to be combined with affiliate marketing? I mean if the blog you started is topping the serps for a long tail keyword, then you have a better chance of making sales. And you can hide your affiliate links by iframing or via a php redirect. What do you think?

      Hey Andrew,

      Well that’s great.

I’m waiting for articles to come back from a writer so I can carry on the case study but then we can really start getting this working.

I absolutely love messing with comment spammers – I usually find out their domain, or email and send them a “stern” invitation to stop wasting my time. It usually works.

Spaulding definitely knows what he’s talking about and lays out some good solid groundwork to follow.. in the blueprint fashion which I enjoy.

Though I’ve yet to have a site that makes $100 per month consistently – I have faith that it is still possible.. without a doubt.

I’ve read a lot about adsense recently… I had no idea that so many people could make a lot from it. I also read that relevant adverts are the key.. which makes sense. Adsense sounded really simple to start with but I’m starting to realise that it’s a lot more complicated that I first thought

    • forest_parks 4 June 2009 at 3:58 pm #

      Hey Olga,

In essence adsense is easy but…. you need to get people to your sites using good quality content and need to provide value to the web all the way through.

However competition can sometimes make it really hard to get the visitors around to enjoy your content and sometimes click on the ads.

  11. King from Lawn Mower 8 June 2009 at 12:14 pm #

So how is the site going? You should broaden your horizons and consider affiliate programs from CJ or clickbank. I mean adsense is fantastic but you’re really limiting yourself with just one form of income. Diversify and grab a few books from amazon aout acne treatment and throw them in. Write reviews of them. (Don’t actually buy them but instead scrape off the gist of them from amazon or other review sites.) This shows that you have some integrity and interest in your subject.

    Cheers mate,

    • Forest 8 June 2009 at 1:32 pm #

      Hey King,

Thanks for popping by. I only just got some content up on the site and will be submitting the articles thios week, so expect another part to the case study this week.

As for affiliate marketing, I totally agree. However since this is a case study I am following the formula exactly and at the end I plan to expand the site and add other monetization methods.

You said “cheers mate”, would I be right to assume you are English? I’m from South East London myself but currently in USA.

      Cheers,

      Forest.

Hey, Forest, nice to see such a detailed description, I am also a fan of Josh Spauding and Mark Mason, I have given the idea some thoughts and want to listen to your opinions.

All the plan is targeted to a niche market, so under what condition will this market no longer being a niche one? I knew the index of monthly searching, but how about the competition? What makes your acne site outstanding from the others if they all follow the same rule?(Well, I have seen several acne niche site before you set up yours, do you think this is still a blue ocean for others to jump in?)

Did Josh mentioned anything about competition and when to give up and walk away in the tutor?

    Thanks, Art in Hong Kong.

    • forest_parks 10 June 2009 at 10:39 am #

      Hey Art,

The thing I am learning is that there are so many people searching for so much on the net that you could almost find yourself a comfy place to dwell in any niche.

The $5 formula is interesting as it takes advantage of relatively low traffic and low search volume keywords but you aim to get a nice return on the adsense clicks.

So… it goes against the grain of needing to get loads of traffic to do well with a niche site.

Basically you are using the power that article directories hold with Google to get the initial traffic burst and then over time allowing your site to rank for longtail phrases (in this case ave PR of top ten sites of less than 3 and only a few thousand searches a month).

Have you had any success with these methods?

  13. Missy from JonasBrothersBlog 13 June 2009 at 12:01 pm #

Will follow your case study, Forest. How long have you been in the Spaulding coaching program? I have him on my list of possible mentors. Found him a few weeks ago and was intrigued.

But am asking around and getting feedback before i commit to any one coaching program. I think that to get to the next level, coaching and mentoring is KEY.

Let me know your feedback on Josh – as a coach?

    • Forest 13 June 2009 at 12:30 pm #

      Hey Missy,

      How are you?

I have found Josh’s program to be great. It doesn’t have a structure like some of the others. It’s a forum and you ask any question and Josh answers plus you get the opinion and help of everyone else.

Also, after 500 comments (which took me 2 month) I ended up with free lifetime membership… I think that’s still happening…

I would say using only high paying adsense keywords would help a lot.

When I was new to IM, I created a site related to home based data entry jobs, and the click rate I got it was an average 7 cents so you can imagine how many clicks you need per day to get $5.

  22. forest_parks 28 May 2009 at 11:22 am #

Kind of nonsense again!!! I think it’s about time to delete all your comments.

  23. Damian 29 May 2009 at 6:35 pm #

Just people getting backlinks dude – bin them! I get them all the time.

Had a really weird one yesterday. I put a post up and got a comment and as you do had a quick shifty at the posters blog which was about weightloss. Fair enough so i approved it. Then the next post they commented again within minutes of adding the article. Probably even too quick to read it! This time i clicked through the same domain redirected to this massive spam page. So i dumped both of them.

The comments were really nice etc. but then they would be.

Also get loads of junk casino ones all the time with totally random crap put in there.

casino is now a bad word on my comments.

  24. forest_parks 31 May 2009 at 2:17 pm #

Ha, I know that, just like seeing if I can get a reaction from them eventually and maybe get them to leave a few decent comments… But it’s unlikely they will!

Them darn casino ones, I get hundreds. Askimet deals with most of it.
