@egk I agree the sub $1k market in overall sales will be what makes or breaks a bottom line at this point. Mac has gone i386 infrastructure which makes the internal important parts non proprietary. Before this Id never even think of owning one. Now I can take out my 8800gtx and slap it into the mac as far as I know and be good to go. Again I totally agree with mac targeting microsoft its a no brainer for them. Your dead on about linux but I don't think this is the end user of the general public so much as the enterprises, etc. If I were building a network and computer structure for a business right now, if they didn't need .net It most certainly would be linux. The power, security, etc even the prices. And now its not odd to be certified in linux support just like the equiv to a mcsa/mcse microsoft cert.

All in all its interesting that mac controls a part of sales anywhere. This could just mean people with money want a mac to be different, or it could be the onset of a trend. I'm not sure as you have touched on the pc market in the sub $1k price range is cut throat. You can get a really nice computer quality wise for sub $1k

I think the numbers are a bit misleading as an indicator of the overall percentage of sales (that 66% of +$1000 sales is probably only a couple percentage points of overall sales). PC owns the under $1000 market which is where a VERY LARGE portion of computer sales are made. Every PC maker has a very good lineup of sub $1000 models where as Mac can not say the same thing.

Personally my biggest complaint about Mac has always been that they are so proprietary. If you want to get an upgrade part you practically have to get it from them! IMO this lack of competition has been what has always kept them higher priced, as compared to PCs where there is a major competitive market.

While Mac has chosen to target Microsoft in its sales campaigns (heck why wouldn't they) I think Microsoft is more concerned about the users that they are losing to Linux and other *nix OS's. Case in point is Microsoft's announcement last year that they were becoming marketing partners with Novell, the owners of SUSE Linux. I think a bigger debate (even though there aren't commercials about it!) is Microsoft vs. Linux.

I actually have both a XP machine and a sub $1000 mac .. it's called a Mac Mini. It works great and I get to play with OSX. My next big laptop will be a mac book pro, but I'm in the market for an Eee PC laptop for blogging.

@Smileguy I am starting to lean that way although this is only based of what I see from others I know.

@Nathaniel I agree I am highly familiar with pc's Im a part time tech in my spare time even. I have 15 years of experience with them. If I ever make the jump to mac Im going to be almost starting over.

@Pff This is true that this does not also contain data from parts bought online and made into computers which would clear the $1k mark easily. This study has less to do with those people than those buying off retail shelfs. That is what alot of these companies put their money on. I think it would be interesting to build a mac the way most of us build pc's. Now their is a sub $1k hell a sub $500 mac that does everything its name brand version does. I'm sure you remember this its made by the company Psystar Corporation. They recently became very famous for selling macs for sub $500 that were definately up to snuff.

I am who longs for a mac but also loves his vista as well. Once I have much more money and really need it and want it, I will buy a mac. If I win the contest at blogginads.com I will have a mac. There are things of both MS and Apple that I like. What I like about MS is I am familiar with it, I know how to operate on that kind of computer, and not as well on the mac. I want a macbook pro but a mac book air would be fine too. What I like about the mac is that there are o many creative ideas into it, all cool different effects and the look is very sleek. It is also very compact. So in a few years expect me to have a big desk, one side my vista and the otherside a mac, switching between them constantly. :) ]

That number doesn't account for computer components purchased and assembled at home, which accounts for a LARGE amount of computers worth over $1,000.

A couple other things.

First, no, Apple doesn't charge more for their hardware because it's better. It's not. They charge more for it because they CAN. It's a violation of copyright laws to install OSX on any computer not made by Apple, Inc (a particular disease Windows doesn't suffer from), so if you want a mac, you pay what they charge. There is no competition for the OS.

Second, try to find a (non-useless) Mac for less than $1,000. You should really change the title of this article to "Mercedes Benz leading the competition in car sales of over $140,000 USD- Ford nowhere in sight"
