When your blog first launched into the blogosphere you probably did not have a very good plan for promoting it. Very few really ever do. As you made it out of your first month you also probably realized that their was much more work to be done in regards to your aesthetics and probably your content as well. Once you graduated into your third month you probably had a very decent handle on consistently posting quality content while also keeping the site very clean and running quickly.

Once your to this point you are receiving some organic traffic from the search engines and from other blogs linking to you in your local pool. You will be trying to drive down your bounce rate and drive up things like commentation, subscription numbers, unique visitors, page views, etc. Today I want to show you how to start a typical blog commenting campaign that will drive targeted traffic directly to your blog whilst also giving you many more back links which can affect your page rank and search engine results.

This is something every serious blogger should consider doing as often as possible. You should be spending the same amount of time on promoting your blog as you do writing the content, and if your good even more. It is a critical balance while to much promotion and not enough content or the reverse can get you in trouble for the most part.  Using networks like EntreCard, Sitehoppin, Technorati and things of this sort will help you find other blogs in your own niche, bookmark these and read them daily, contribute as often as you can. Make sure your targeting blogs with top commentators on as well as comment luv. Become a subscriber and keep those subscriptions in one place, make a special email account just for this as often most owners will subscribe back and return the favor of links, etc.

What I want to show you today is how important it is to comment on other blogs and forums and exactly what this does. Make sure by the end of this article you see the 0 cost investment versus what you will get back. Essentially you are trading your time for potential improvement on your own blogs statistics.

This is all a very large exercise in networking more or less. It just isn’t face to face rather it is blog to blog. First you will need to find a group of blogs within your niche. I suggest scouring Technorati, or even the likes of Entrecard or Sitehoppin. Once you manage to find 25-50 blogs that are of decent quality and that actually post regularly and have everything you need to gain from this, top commentators, etc. Rotate daily or weekly between these blogs posting comments, etc. Make sure you are as close to the top as you can get as this will generally get you the most exposure. I do not recommend posting a comment for the sake of being first or a back link. People are much more likely to click through to your blog if your saying something relevant to the topic and with some general intelligence about yourself.

As long as your adding about 10 new sites a week this will always work in your favor keep rotating and do your best to vary. If you do not post daily I would cut back how much more effort your putting into this and focus more on your content delivery.  By doing this you will start many new relationships and meet many new blog authors and commentators. This can only work to your advantage in promoting your own blog, especially if you are putting the same efforts into the content. If you work hard and target blogs that use the right plugins and have an audience that uses Alexa tool bars you will be building yourself back links and better Alexa rankings.

Another item to think about during this type of campaign is to better your own page rank. You will already be working on this by commenting and making sure your in the top commentators on more than one blog, but to maximize the effectiveness of your spent time I would also try to target blogs in your own niche that have higher page ranks.  To help you on your journey and to save you some time I have compiled a list of blogs with fairly decent PR’s I plan to add these to the bloggers toolbox to help everyone out so keep an eye out for future updates.

You can find many blogs by niche yourself by using a program called Comment Kahuna. I believe it is still free as long as you sign up for their mailing list as well. I did and this has become my greatest source for discovering new blogs.

Really and truly no one knows how the google pr’s are come by but we do know back links and domain age are major factors. By keeping up your back link count and commenting on blogs you will be doing more than one job in just one action. This makes promotion easier for you.

As of late my blog commenting has slacked enormously and I can see that my traffic from other blogs is down from my analytics. This is enough evidence to me that this works. If that is not quite enough for you I suggest you try this out for a week and see what happens. This in combination with sezwho and EC can work in your favor in more than one way. While EC traffic is not the best the credits are valuable and make great incentive for other bloggers to try and win them. Their are many way to approach commenting, but one thing is for sure. Comment meaningfully and often on as many blogs as you can stand as often as you can stand. You will see the difference in your analytics and in your own commentation as well as your rss numbers.

I am curious to know how many blogs you read and try to comment on daily and if you have a personal success story involving this type of process. Does it work? Only if you stay with it. Is it worth it? Absolutely unless you can afford on average $.10 per click in a ppc campaign, and often times much much more depnding on your keywords.

    Hey Ben,
You’re absolutely right. Blog commenting is a great way to build traffic to a new blog and to foster relationships with other bloggers early on. An effective commenting strategy could make a world of difference.

Best of luck to you. Looking forward to seeing some of your comments on WinningtheWeb.com. :)

WoW, I just saw this exact same list last night on Thou Shall Blog yesterday. These blogs must be pretty good to have two different bloggers promote them.

Yeah man…I have a nice lil system in place. And I group according to how they treat commentators. Do they have the top commentators plugin, comment luv, are they no follow in the comments? A lot will be no follow in the comments but have the top commentator plugin…so, joining in the community gains you a new buddy and a nice backlink :)

You absolutely HAVE to get out there and rub cyperbytes with other bloggers….that’s how others will find out about you.

Make sure, like you said, you are actually adding something helpful to the conversation.

Thank you for including my blog in this list. I have always tried to add features that give some benefits to my readers.

I have never really monitored my own commenting but know it does vary a lot from day to day. I never comment just for the sake of it – just to get the backlinks – as I would find this tedious but do still find plenty of content that I want to comment on.
