Content Is King And Linking Is Queen

Posted on 29. Jul, 2008 by in Blogging Tips

I bet many are still wondering why who got what page rank. Especially after looking at things like back links, analytics and even some SEO tactics. Do you feel like maybe they know something your don’t? I want to show you the universal secret that your competitor does not want you to see. Let’s get you back above the competition.

Outside of the more minor parts of the PR equation I have laid out in the past week since the update I have purposely avoided talking about:

Content.
+
Back Links.

Every blogger that has ever read any blogging advice blog has heard at least once a month about how content is king. I’m sure your local blogging authority also has put the word out to the streets that Back Links are important as well.

Content Is King
Make sure your taking care to write well thought out and researched posts. Your competition is definitely doing this and it shows every day as they gain rss subscriptions on you. Instead of pumping out many short posts or running off on 20 tangents focus yourself and plan your content. This is the goose that will lay the golden eggs of readership, commentation and growth. Make sure your cruising your competitors and see what aspects are making them popular. I would not recommend copying so much as taking inspiration from it and growing your own setup toward your ultimate goal of success. Always focus on improvement and keep your readers in mind. If you notice any negative effects you may want to reconsider the changes your making and not make them permanent.

Having a killer About page +1. Having an outline of your short and long term goals +1. Making your blog transparent and playing to your reader +1.

Linking Is Queen
This is much more work and is going to take a bit of research on your part.  Try searching their site via google, technorati, etc and see what they are getting love for.  A very ethical way to sneak up and pass your competitor is to find all his back links and examine how they were able to obtain them. I will not tell you to buy links, etc but if you can get a link everywhere that your competitor has already plus what you have. Win. Win. If you keep up with this as well as your own link building campaign you will surely gain the upper hand in the PR and back link war.  I will tell you now link farms or really low quality links are to be avoided like the plauge.  And by low quality I mean the frequency of posting and the length of post. If either of these are questionable and will not enhance your readers experience do not use them. Period.

Royal Success

Getting good links takes time and patience. Writing is not usually done overnight either. What can make this overly tedious as well is once these projects are done you then have to wait for the search engines to discover and re-evaluate your site. Both the link campaign and the writing projects should be something done on a regular basis, not as a one-shot injection. Try to create new pages every month, and to get some links every month. That way your site will make the gradual climb to the top. And who doesn’t want that?

This with regular SEO audits, site optimizations and speed checks will take you to the stratosphere of success.

I agree man. The thing is, so many expect this stuff to be quick, there is no quick fix. It takes hard work to optimize and get your site in front of the engines, so they see it.

But once it’s there…oohhhhh baby! When your articles are getting indexed within hours…..that is a lovely thing! I’m not there but I have buddies that are…

Bottom line is, blogging, or…successful blogging takes time, work, dedication, and determination. That’s why you’ve got to enjoy it! Hey, I love it..so, I can’t complain about anything :)

Content is king and back links queen. Very nice post. Creating killer content that is at the same time unique is a very important part. Having backlinks almost everywhere is a good plan too. The thing is, your competitors are also your friends, and vice versa. It is a whole battle itself for royal success.:)

I love the catchy title of your article, Ben. If I were to add,

Getting a few of the right links, from the right places can be more valuable than getting 100 links from the wrong places.

Oh yes, yes, yes! We shouldn’t underestimate the power of link building. It’s one of the critical factors of any successful blog.

Did I just say the new header of your blog is awesome? I just love the way you mash up your image shadow into your logo. Very creative. Did you do it yourself, Ben?

Nice relationship of the very important topics as webmasters. Getting few backlinks, few masters says getting .edu link even add more then .com links and same is the case with .gov links, as such both are authority sites. Myth or reality?

Fantastic way to look at it! Depending on your website though, sometimes I would even rank link building as the King, while content is the Queen. I know most people brag about content being king, but I think when you are small time, the link building is what’s gonna get you to the top, and then yes Content will then become the king!

    Till then,

i think this suites perfect on content and link building as king and queen respectively. Its really well said about content that its a king that can really give the good traffic if its uniques and there is something rich which attract visitors while link building is also a good process for generating good amount of backlinks to the site. So Both are useful and vital for any site to improve it on any search engine.
