I’ve been going through an email cleanse the last few weeks. To be quite honest I am getting sick of hype arriving in my inbox. I know some of it may be good information but these days I am feeling that I would rather get the info late after some user testing has been done.
The amount of people getting into blogging for profit and other reasons is growing an an absolutely alarming rate so the Guru’s and wannabe Guru’s are going nuts telling everyone just what they should do to be the next big thing or get top slot in Google. Much of this info filters through and is recommended on good faith. Any of us that have given on information have probably given on false information without knowing. After all this whole blogging game is one huge guessing game so we have to make educated guesses and sometimes go with our our gut feelings.
I’ll give you an example. One solid piece of information that is passed around time and time again is that you need back links for Google’s little spiders to find your new website and get you indexed.
Well just last week I registered 5 new domains and set up hosting on them, nothing else. I submitted each site to webmaster tools (no sitemap). When I came to install Wordpress on them this week and start getting them ready I thought I would see if they had indexed, just for the hell of it….. Guess what, all 5 had been indexed for their domain and the only content they had was the cgi bin folder that Hostgator hosting installs.
So this little piece of solid “truth” that is passed around, clearly is not true. Backlinks are very important in my opinion but you don’t have to have them to get indexed…. I see that as a fact now!
So taking this thought with me even trusted sources could be passing along false information, not necessarily intentionally.
I’m not saying ignore the Guru’s or never buy any ebooks or products, just be cautious and don’t expect everything to work to the letter.
Many of my methods for making cash online have come about from reading, lots, and then my own intuition and twist of methods that I have read. Use your noggin a bit, test everything, don’t believe the hype and develop your own place online and your own ways, there is plenty of space.
Let me know what you think?

Interesting – I have also been thinking the same thing about getting indexed. On many websites I see ’sign up to learn how to get indexed by Google’ etc. as if it’s a big thing. People must pay money to learn the ’secrets’ whereas all my sites get indexed by doing nothing with them, pretty much without fail I think, after around a week maximum. Often they are indexed sooner on their own – it’s so sad that people are ripping people off just to find out how to get indexed, and even causing them extra work!
You are right about the emails though. I’m doing the same. I also recently came across the idea that if a new program is good, chances are you’ll hear about it eventually – so you don’t need to sign up right away and be subscribed to everyone’s list. You’ll probably do better off without people trying to sell you everything when it’s first launched and not tested.

I think the problem is people want everything for no work so they buy into these schemes.
You do need backlinks and do need a lot of what the gurus say but dont have to pay for it all… Building sites just takes time and you get hits and misses.
I definitely agree Forest. The web is full of misguided advice. Internet marketing and blogging is all a guessing game. A lot of it is good advice, but a lot of it is also not necessarily true. Until you test things for yourself, you cannot assume it is 100% true.
Absolutely!
That is interesting that you got indexed so quickly. Perhaps some other website links to recently registered domains. Indexing itself isn’t really as important as people think. It’s getting rankings and traffic that is important. You do need links for that.
That is important and yes you are completely right about the rankings and traffic needing the links.
I set up a few sites on the weekend and have added backlinks and so far nothing. I’m off to add them to Webmaster tools now to see if that helps!
It’s so true what you say that the so called Gurus will try and make you believe anything to sell you something. I’ve given up reading the emails in the list I signed up to – I get hundreds a week and most of them are the same email sent by different people trying to get me to shell out for the latest craze!

Hey Clare, sometimes it just takes patience. The links you are building is ultimately a good thing and will help with your rankings significantly.
Don’t give up and you have probably made a good choice about the emails.
Webmaster tools is essential I think.
Your right on target, testing. What works for one might not work in someone elses case. Google seems hungry for new sites, as one person mentioned they had 1000 keywords listed and only 200 of them were searched for more than once. This tells us that the searchers are trying out new keyword combination’s and Google is on the hunt for fresh content. They want you indexed as bad as you want to be.
Regards
This is true, searches are more intelligently searching than they used to and google is more intelligently providing the info.
If you provide the right content google need you to keep the searches happy!
*lol* I don’t even use webmaster tools! I’m too lazy to do the backlink thing right off the bat, plus I’m embarrassed at the thought of someone following a link and finding an empty or nearly empty website. So, I rarely link to a site when it’s in its infancy.
Even if I don’t post anything (and I usually delete that “Hello World” post as soon as WP is installed to prevent THAT from getting indexed) I’m usually indexed in a week or two. At least, when using WP. The only sites I had difficulty with are the one pagers.
Hey, I have a question about the tools- can you install Google sitemap even if you have no content/posts/pages set up on your site yet? Sometimes I like to get a site all set up and organized and then ignore it for a few weeks before posting anything. Once I get to posting, I’m out of set up mode and don’t want to bother installing anything else.

If you don’t want to unleash a blog yet then just selec the hide from search engine option in wordpress.
Also never be embarrassed about getting a visit, just make sure some valuable content is up.
Yes if you just use the google sitemap plugin for wordpress you can submit that to webmaster tools… and you must go set up all your sites on webmaster tools, NOW!!
I’m not sure which so-called “guru” spread that clearly misguided lie, but like you, I can attest that getting your website indexed in Google is something that CAN happen overnight. I’ve watched it happen with the websites I own as well as the ones I flip.
In fact, I begin to get worried if it takes more than 3 days. Typically, I’ve found that any website I own which contains Google Adsense and one of my built-in social bookmarking plugins all share the common denominator of being indexed faster than the norm.
But then again, I’m no guru, and after being burned early on in my IM career, I’ve since stopped following so-called “gurus.” With the exception of 2 Internet Marketers, I’m a trial and error type of person.
I’ve been burned by a few so called too and just mainly follow my own advice and friends who have been testing things.
Links are important for getting rankings I have learned that much
I grew up in a Catholic church too and became a Baptist. I think that it was becaus the Catholic church was too ritualistic and repetetive. Nondenominational and baptist churches grabbed me because we talked about the bible and how to apply it to real issues today. It emphasized a personal relationship with Christ which as corny as it sounds exponentially increased my spiritual growth and maturity.

Hi Web Designer, I’m interested in knowing how you relate your comment to this post?
I’m glad you found some light through religion. Everyone needs something to look up to, a goal to obtain and something to keep them moving forward.
Not that a few links ever hurt?!
I think you are spot on with the webmaster tools though…it is the most under used asset!!
Perhaps a post idea for you?

No links are good, as many as you can get…. just not essential for getting indexed.
A webmaster tools post could be a good one, thanks.
That’s funny about the cgi bins – I try hard to filter my emails as much as possible so that I can get some work done! I have more than enough to study, which haven’t even had time for yet. Plus, the longer I am working online, the more often I find that materials are being promoted to me which cover things I already know. Sometimes I just can’t take the time to sort through it all – and if I do, I wind up having little time for anything else.

There are some gems out there and I have done well following some peoples advice but I am extremely cautious these days.
last night, i submitted my 10 blogs to google webmaster and submitted also my sitemaps, hope it can help to get index all of my blog

Well thanks for telling us about your church experiences, but what does this have to do with scrutinizing online marketing advice? While a lot of what you read will be questionable, it helps to develop some sources that you can generally rely on for quality advice.

Ha ha, yes you have a point!
Even outside of the internet marketing world you can’t trust absolutely 100% of what you hear. And you should always check other sources/people, one time I asked one of the advisers at the college about the possibility of transfer and she flat out said it wasn’t possible, but then I asked another person and I found out that it was, so always checking with a different source on the facts etc, is a good way to break threw the BS and the good. Doesn’t always work, but it helps.
Till then,
Jean
Totally agreed, all good points. Check and check again.
I have to agree! it’s because I have to….this is really true. Guru’s keep telling everybody on do’s and don’ts but even if we do it nothing happens. I think they are just telling lies just to keep the moving in them but in you….they don’t care.
Nice article.
Thanks for your opinion, I agree
nice topic and it is interesting . thanks for sharing .

The essence of modern marketing is a lie. There should be no doubts about it. I think that every good commercial need to lie a lot, because there are no miracle products and no wonderful services. Everything is just in a shape of modern reality that could turn out to be the greatest place that we could imagine or just an ordinary, gray and moderate city/town, where everything is so boring. The role of commercial is always to show something better than in reality.
Agreed totally…. They are bending the truth in most cases!
Yup, I do the same. I will study and make my own customization to suite my need. Not everything work exactly the way it show.

ive read so many posts on this topic, some writers give u advice that really counts, a few times i have read up and taken advice but it doesnt really work however learning from the real guru’s counts, take tips from guru’s if u want to learn how to blog and be succesful.
I don’t necc agree…. You don’t need Guru tips to be a successful blogger.
I agree about the fact that lots of people start their blogging activities day by day for making money. I’ve seen that the common line of all these guys is precisely talking about how to make money online. So I wonder, do these people make their visitors to click on ads if all their visitors are bloggers seeking just for tips… I don’t know, that’s a question I’ve always had.
By the way, nice Blog this one you have. I expect to visit it periodically!

I agree with you. i bought a hosting account and set up Joomla on it. For one reason I didnt have time to actually make the site so it was left as the standard joomla layout. Next thing I know my site is appearing in keyword searches for joomla and I had not done a thing to it.
That’s strange but very cool that that happened!
