Effective Blogging Media For Your Success

Posted on 02. Jun, 2008 by in Blogging Tips

I have been thinking about all the different types of media available for use to bloggers. On one hand we have the still semi popular pod casting, this is great for the reader on the go that wants to absorb your content for instance on the subway going into work, or on the afternoon jog. One problem with this method of delivery from a bloggers point of view could be that for some voice acting is hard, or that it is hard to be comfortable relaying the content in such a way that it is still as interesting as you originally intened. Their is always the fact that monetization is difficult and often most people will glaze over if you attempt to be to blatent about it.

Another media made popular in recent years is that of video blogging. This to me has some of the same issues as pod casting, but allows for easier monetization depending on how you go about it. Many people are not trained to talk to the camera in such a way that is not invasive to the reader. I think John Chow is a great example of one of the blogospheres best video bloggers. He does not rely exclusively on this media, and does not really monetize the videos them self. He comes across in a really professional and personal way. Connecting to your readers on this level will bring them back every time. This is also an extrodinary way to draw in new readers. The downfall is that you have to have “that” personality that works for being filmed. It’s just a natural thing. It usually is not something that is taught in a short time if you were attending a school, and getting comfortable with the camera is always hard at first. This media for the most part seems to be in use about as much as podcasts are at this point in the blogospheres history.

The newest way to reach your readers is by broadcasting video and sound live on your blog either through your own propietary software or the ever popular ustream.tv which is an idiot proof flash interface that will broadcast you to the world. This is an excellent way for many bloggers to engage their readers live in chat while being recorded visually and auditorily. This opens so many possibilities, but has all of the same pitfalls as podcasting and video blogging with one exception. No do overs. The live element makes it incredibly exciting for the viewer as they know they are participating in real time as real as it can be. I have looked into this and I have plans to do this as long as I can keep viewers interested. Of course this will be after my big move which is coming up very soon.

Another thing which I have not seen utilized is voip programs such as ventrillo or teamspeak this is a wonderful and free way to “teleconference” with your readers and have live conversations about anything your heart desires. Not to be left out but skype also has a teleconference feature which many bloggers are already using. My skype is published just in case anyone ever wants to talk about anything I am posting or just to say hi.

The point to all this is to maximize the use of the options that every blogger has available to them to enhance the readers experience and keep them coming back for more. Without your reader being informed and entertained or something they will not be subscribing to your rss or bookmarking your site. Take advantage of these free methods to relay massive amounts of content and watch your blog grow more and more successfully. If you don’t take my word for it cruise through some of the top blogs in your niche and see how they are fulfilling their readers needs.

How do you engage your readers? Do you use any of the media forms mentioned in your blog? Maybe even some that I missed? How do you feel when your surf blogs that are effectively using these media types?

Great post, I definitely plan to get into video, maybe some live video, and have major plans for using the free teleconferencing methods.

I didn’t know about the ones you named, but will be looking into them.

I’m waiting for one of you to have a contest where you give away a vlog kit! So I can win a camera…then the wife won’t ask why I’m buying toys!

I’m not a big fan of either podcasts or video blogs…I am a super fast reader, so if I can read info I will do that instead because it’s faster than a 10 minute video basically saying the same thing.

Some people learn better by watching, but not me…I slept through all of school and still got 4.0′s.

It is always good to offer to the masses though, and any posts you make on your blog that also have video if applicable should have the script or whatever typed out for those that just don’t get into it, but as many have shown statisticly most don’t mind video and interactive, well yea it rocks.

I use skype exclusively for chatting to my business partner. I don’t think it is quite reliable enough for customer calls, but it saves a ton of money for us as we both work remotely.
