Their are a few easy and free ways to gain some short term momentum with your own blog. As we have discussed in the past: guest posting, blog commenting, and advertising are the easiest way to get your name out into the blogosphere. What we really have not covered is how destructive one of these methods can be if not done with the most care. This is insipired by a recent trip across the blogosphere which made me ponder about a few blogger’s campaigns to get noticed. After all you want to be noticed for the right reasons and in a positive light.

I have outlined just a few of the most destructive actions many bloggers are taking on their haphazard trip across the blogosphere. I highly recommend you reavaluate your latest campaigns and stick to the high roads on this stuff. Otherwise you risk destroying your own reputation and maybe those of the readers of your blog.

Some of the worst things you can do:

One to Two word comments: This is probably the worst thing you can do for your own personal public imagine. It becomes two fold when your attaching your blog’s identity.

Not Reading Posts: This can show your lack of respect for the author and his readers, and spills over some to your own if they happen to frequent the same blog and see your antics.

Flaming or Personal Attacks: This is something that can get you into a lot of trouble as a person much less a blogger. The best characteristic of being a blogger to me is networking and making new friends. While not all of us agree on many issues the blogosphere is a very accepting place. If you go out of your way to personaly attack someone or flame them for an opinion then be prepared for the backlash in the form of unsubscribes, and counter flames as well.

Comments That Do Not Add Value: Randomly adding a comment and dressing up a one sentence compliment into a paragraph will not add value to the discussion and will make you look pretty dam foolish.

Excessive Self Linking: When you are commenting on blogs with comment luv on, why, WHY? would you abuse this and fill your post with links to your own stuff. If it contributes to the discussion then ok, but limit yourself and link with permission. This can get you banned from many blogs.

These may seem like things many would not do, but it would be a painful trip through the blogosphere on many blogs where this occurs. It is becoming more and more popular. I would like to think this is because spam bots are becoming more able to overide defenses, but I have a sinking feeling it is a lame attempt at a link building campaign with no thought to the consequences in the end game.

Hopefully no one that reads this blog participates in any of these five very easy ways to destroy thier blog and reputation.

I hope I do not do these often, I know I try to become a respected commentator throughout the blogosphere, but it can be hard.
I have never done a two word type comment.
I have not read all of the post, but I know the concept and my comment still ads value more than others.
    I have never attacked anyone.
My comments mostly add value, I may have a fluff one here and there. but I usually have a good comment along with that (for example you ask a question, they answer, then you thank them).
I do not do excessive self linking, I rarely link to my site.

Okay, that comment was a joke lol, had to get ya buddy. But seriously, I agree man. Too many go about it with no clear plan in place. My thing is, I just like to network, I read something and if it sparks a comment I post it.

I’ve never liked the single word comments, if all I have to say is “good job” then I may as well leave that out. What’s the point? To be seen? No, I’d rather add value to the site, and be part of it’s community.

There are times where a post doesn’t even require much of a comment outside of a “great job” so, I’ll just leave it alone and go read the other posts that require or encourage a comment.

Loving your series this week man, good as usual.

Never really thought if my comments added value or not, usually they are just comments, my opinion :) But really, I never make comments like “lol”,”nice one”,”gud one” and the such, most of the times my comments are like… this :D

I think this is a big reason why a lot of bloggers have been disabling dofollow comments. There are so many tools out there now that enable people to comment without regards to the points you made in this post. Its kind of a shame as blogs were built on an alternative media principle that allowed people to share their opinions, but many people now just use them as a place to build links.

I’ve probably been guilty of a few of these in the past with a couple of my older blogs. You soon learn it doesn’t pay off though.

Never really thought about if my comments contribute anything. I always try to comment with something meaningful but if i have nothing to say I dont bother commenting.

I personally hate comments that don’t bring anything to the discussion. My blog being do follow, I pay particular attention to the comments I approve because people tend to post “great post” just to get a backlink and it is really annoying. It’s no science, comment to bring something or don’t comment.

Totally agree with u. I get comments like: Hey great post or totally informative but couldn’t understand the last paragraph and stuff like that. I usually ignore such comments.. While going thru other blogs I do thank the author if they provide good tips.. Besides that comments with excessive self linking is equal to spam..

I get this a lot on my blog where people come along, not reading the post and submit a comment that really doesn’t add to anything.

Posts like “love the post” or “that is what I was thinking” are things that I seem to be coming up against more and more.

I am not always sure of all the topics so i dont always feel I can really “add value” and improve upon the knowledge that the blog author has posted but sometimes i feel i can add to the discussion by a good question or some insight that may be entertaining or funny.
I can be pretty conceited sometimes but i am smart enough to know that some of the guys whose blogs I’m
reading are way more technically advanced or experienced than I am.
I hope that counts as ” adding value”
    thanks and take care
    Bry
