Info: Net Neutrality. What Is It, And Why You Should Care.

Posted on 16. Apr, 2008 by in News

The idea of net neutrality is about keeping the hands of the worlds most powerful network owners off of the Internet. It is essentially the idea of taking steps to prevent them from taking steps to alter basic open nature of the net which has led to its success. Net Neutrality keeps the Internet as a free and open marketplace, so that a small number of otelcos and cable monopolies will be unable to choke off competition and innovation.

Net neutrality was a founding principle of the Internet, and was the law of the land until 2005. The courts and the regulators changed the rules in 2005 when they eliminated the nondiscrimination requirements that had applied for decades to phone service and, up to that point, to most residential Internet access. Implementing net neutrality is a return to the basic principles that make the Internet work for consumers and innovators.

I am sure that you could look around on Google news or any other place and find stories of such things. Comcast is currently under fire for the way it manipulates its bandwidth towards certain sites and not to others. Another recent debacle is Comcasts handling of torrents in general and either restricting the bandwidth to a point where the usefulness no longer exists or completely cutting off the customer from the service.

Net Neutrality is very important although I am not personally sure how this managed to be changed in congress we need to unite and make a very distinct and unwaivering stand about what we want. Net Neutrality benefits everyone; whereas, the lack of it will stagnate and turn the Internet into a captured market by the otelcos and cable companies of the US.

I am fairly certain you can see the urgency involved with this and where it could end up on either side of the fence. I know I am 100% for Net Neutrality, are you?

Internet is Business. Not many people realize how true these words are. When people think about business, some hardly connect the internet to the concept and disregard the power behind this somewhat uncharted territory of the economic world…found more at http://mpzik.org
