Opportunist vs Tactician

Posted on 28. Aug, 2008 by in Blogging Tips, Internet Marketing Tips

Are you an opportunist? Do you practice the art, or policy of taking advantage of opportunities or circumstances often with little regard for principles or consequences. Or are you a tactician which plans in advance for successful events, campaigns , etc? Sitting and thinking about this for a minute may amaze you which you really are. While I am sure we would really like to say both when needed your either planning success with contingencies in place, or you are waiting for opportunity to knock.

The problem with waiting is that the business, readers, sales it could be anything are passing you buy, and trust me they are. Someone else is out there planning to take advantage of your opportunistic mentality, and when they finally have cashed in enough off the opportunities that you have taken advantage of in the past you will have dried up and gone because the marketer with a plan is the marketer who has the best results akin to success.

It is my opinion that the marketers and even bloggers that remain opportunist miss out on the real success. If you stop by any of your niches success stories you will notice they have a plan. Granted this may not have been, but when they recognized continued opportunity they adapted a strategy or a tactic to take advantage and exploit to their own goals. This my friends is how business works. Some of us start out with Bachelors degrees and no experience armed with the tools to work towards success. Some of us come out running and keep hammering away until we have struck the gold which we wish to refine. Both of these are acceptable and daily manageable as all things go. The point is that if your still in the opportunist mode of thinking and your not happy with your results re-examine your practices and make an attempt at a plan. This will benefit you greatly in terms of goal realization and of course the end game goal self actualization.

So Are you an opportunist, or a tactician?

  1. Opportunist.. I think.

I wait for the opportunity to arise and then take it.

I honestly don’t know what I am. I will be watching myself and the decisions I make in the coming week, maybe that will be able to tell me something about myself. But you didn’t tell us Ben, what are you?

You know, I thought about it a bit more and my first reaction is to say I am an opportunist, and the be more honest about it I am both. I think in order to make it you have to. I may have started as just another internet marketer that was watching and setting new trends for products, but now I have a plan to… I will be interested to see what you come up with after this week.

Great read. This is like a report from Rich Schefren called Internet Business Manifesto where he discusses the difference between Opportunistic & Strategic thinking. But then sometimes there could be a lot said for opportunity style thinking because it is in those moments if we are open that we may discover something that we never knew existed before. I have spent 34 years as a musician and in the music industry we call it jaming. Just kicking around seeing what comes up. Truth is I believe there is a time for both and balance is the key, knowing which one to use and when. Like your stuff man.

The analogy of “jamming” works perfectly and I have to say I took inspiration from Mr. Schefren on this as it really made me think which way I was going, and after deeper thought which way was best? And it seems while my opinion may be changed that both are the way to go. Choosing any one of them over the other means your not prepared.
