Page Rank is sooooo 2008

Posted on 20. Oct, 2009 by in Blogging, Blogosphere News, SEO News

Talking to my buddy Joe Swopes from Imwithjoe.com, and discussing the various requirements many advertisers have implemented for their affiliate programs. I’m cracking up over here, learning about companies who require “no less than a PR 3.” Come on guys- Page rank means nothing. Ya, I said it. It’s a loose comparative tool for relative sites but does not rank the site’s productivity. A less than google-perfect site can still be making tens of thousands of dollars. I know this because one of my sites has well over 550,000 in traffic monthly and ranks #1 out of more than 2 million sites… and has a PR of …. ready for this? PAGE RANK 2. Now if that PR 2 was keeping my earnings for that site at less than 10k, I may actually do something about it. But considering last month that site made around $20k USD, I think I’ll focus my efforts elsewhere and advise others to do the same.

PS. Google can still love you even if your PR is in the tank. (Points up and winks) ;)

    Holy Poop- She liiiiives! :-)

And straight on. Google even pulled PR out of their webmaster tools (supposedly) because no one would believe them when they said it doesn’t matter. Oh well. My personal blog (which averages about 3 hits a day and I post less than once a month) has a PR3 which garners me decent pay when I sell links via PayPerPost. My PR0 sites, however, are the ones that get traffic and actually make money from the traffic instead of me selling links!

Maybe I should sign up with those affiliate programs via my personal blog? :-) I seem to get a lot of traffic for “Andrea Bocelli Elmo”. That should make me rich.

    Loriiiiiiiiiiii, hiya
Would you happen to have a link where Google dropped their “it doesn’t matter” page rank news? I’ve caught a few references here and there but never anything too direct. You know I hate relying solely on my own experience afterall ;)

What affiliate programs are requiring that? lol. Just skip over ‘em.
What if I had PR3, sent them $3,000 in sales, but then dropped to PR2 before payments were sent out? Would I have to wait until I was back to PR3 to do “business with them” again and get my money? lol

Would they drop me now because I’m “PR2″, even though I sent them $3k the previous month? lol

Jenz, are you going to post again tomorrow, or should I just pop back in here around May 2010?

    Cheers
    Jay

I haven’t had a problem getting approved for affiliate programs since way back when I reached 100k monthly readers. I just checked my stats and I had over 813k last month on my sites with a PR 2 on the largest one. If an affiliate turned me down because of my PR, I think I’d have to question their understanding of internet marketing and move on quickly to a better partner.

Good question on the dropping of a PR. Since PR has been known to fluctuate, I’m going to assume it would only be verified upon application submission?

Thanks for the links Neal! Great quote in the first link by Susan Moskwa regarding Google’s perspective on PR:
“We’ve been telling people for a long time that they shouldn’t focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it’s the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true. We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it. :-)

If that doesn’t say it all…

Heck, I depend on just your experience all the time! But in this case, I got the info from Griz: http://makemoneyonlinegrizzly.com/google-news/webmaster-tools-drops-page-rank/

My best earning site was a PR0 for ages and ages….. All sensible people know it’s a load of crap and now Google confirms it, great :) .

Still I like to have a peak at my pagerank from time to time, for my own pleasure!

    Dudes.. I have a confession…

I don’t pay attention to shit. Nothing.

Don’t look at stats, page rank, technorati rating… all that stuff is useless to me.

I’ve gotten top spot, first page, across multiple search engines with a PR 0….

It’s just like duplicate content… it’s a load of crap.

So, I started writing you this very long comment disagreeing with your post. However, the comment became so long that I thought it better as a post for my marketing blog (see mymarketer.net).

It’s funny, because I know people will disagree with me but the simple fact is that strong page rank backlinks are what makes my affiliate websites rank for competitive keywords. No matter what the “experts” say, page rank right now is the best determination of how good a backlink is for my websites.
