Paid Inclusion, PPC, or SEO for Bloggers
Posted on 16. Aug, 2010 by brilliantjeni in Blogging Tips, Highlights, Traffic Generation
I’m currently in Fiji at a Tony Robbins business mastery event- an event that was so great last week, I extended my trip to participate in the next one. If any of you fine bloggers have the chance to try go, I would highly suggest it. Anyway, back to blogging business…
Tony had us review the business plan for a participant here; a sharp man who happened to own a web business. His goal- to increase his web traffic by 15,000 I believe. 15,000 is not an extremely high number. Now, having spoken to thousands of web business owners I can’t say that I was surprised when their first line of attack was to go PPC and Paid Inclusion. I hope I wasn’t on camera at that exact moment, because my hands flew up to my face and I’m sitting there shaking my head. In nearly 4 years, I have never had to use ppc or paid inclusion. While PPC is a valid and potentially effective approach to driving traffic, I would only suggest this after much focus on other strategies.

Paid inclusion however… Oh wow, where do I start. Aside from the fact that paid inclusion pissed me of for giving weak, unuseful sites, paying for paid inclusion really only generates temporary results. As my new friend and SEO guru, Stephen, said just moments before me, paid inclusion is dead. Ultimately, search engines NEED- not just “want,” but NEED to provide surfers with the highest quality sites. This is becoming more important not just every day but literally every time a search is done. Anyone else stop using Yahoo when they went all willy nilly “paid inclusion” on us for a bit? I know that was the day I discovered just how great Google was.
Just ad Yahoo did, at some point, a search engine is going to choose staying alive and monetizing through other means rather than risk losing their searchers to better search engines.
Knowing im a successful blogger, Tony encouraged me to share my thoughts on this. What I suggested was that they opt for a permanent solution, focusing on SEO. The same money spent on temporary paid inclusion ads can be used for SEO improvements that will place them in a better position when paid inclusion is long gone. The other option is to spend now and make a little , rather then leave them hanging with the competition passing them by.
The bottom line, avoid paid inclusion of any type, see ppc as a temporary strategy, and focus on your SEO.
Organic search is the future. Position yourself well for it.

That is so cool! Fiji !! Never been but I will get there. So how was it laying down the information for our man Tony Robbins? Thanks for sharing all of your information. I think that I have turned a corner. The corner of actually doing and not just reading. Thanks Brilliant one! Peace, Troy
You’re ahead of the game Troy! Most bloggers don’t understand the importance of reading more & implementing later! I’ve got my eye on your blog and can’t wait to see where it goes!
I agree 100% with you. I have also used PPC for getting traffic on one of my sites and results are not very good! However, search engine traffic(organic) is always better and will remain great always.
Thanks for the tips and hope you enjoy time in Fiji.

Thanks Ishan! There’s a great new book out by my friend Stephan Spencer (you may have seen him speak at any number of blog conferences.) It’s called Art of SEO. I’m convinced Stephan and his co authors know more about SEO than Google themselves. For anyone focusing on SEO rather than PPC, etc, I’d definitely recommend it. If you pick it up, keep me posted on you’re thoughts and experinces with the tactics. Brilliantjeni @ gmail
Fiji eh, that is where you have been. Glad it is going awesome.
I absolutely agree, never been that interested in PPC, flirting with it very very briefly and realised it was a load of old crap.
Good on you for sharing that gem with everyone.

Hello Jeni,
You’re quite on point. I have always said that the time is very close when the men will be separated from the boys. You are either ready to learn and implement the proper long lasting process of making money online or you look for another trade, simple! It’s the harsh truth.
My advice:
SEO tricks wouldn’t even help you. If you think it does now, believe me, it’s only for a limited time. Do proper SEO. Amazingly it doesn’t take much. Just use your keyword in the right places (do not over do it though) and build keyword based content pages. Every page you write should focus on a keyword and the keywords for your pages should all be related to your site’s overall topic. Be focused on your site concept keyword. Do not add any page that doesn’t fit in. If you do that you would be confusing the search engines.
Most importantly write VALUE BASED CONTENT. That satisfies the two people you want to satisfy – The search engines and your readers.
So if you are just starting, you are lucky, start right! Have you been doing it wrongly, re-trace your steps if you want to build a lasting online business.
Good one Jeni

Well put Karo! & gr8 to see you here as always.
Interesting that you bring up value based content. I’m writing out a quick start blogging guide which has me really evaluating my own approaches to blogging. Nirvana easy thing to do, considering I rely heavily on instinct & trial & error experiences.
I’ve recently had the honor of meeting and learning from some incredibly brilliant business men and women- Anthony Robbins, Keith Cunningham, Chet Holmes, Lawrence Jones… One of the most important tips I’ve picked up from them is the importance of adding value for my readers. As Keith says, it’s all about these three things: 1. Find out what they want.
2. Go and get it.
3. Give it to them.
This is just as true in blogging than it is in any other business. It’s about constantly adding value to our reader’s lives and I do this every day. It’s the reason I am now in the top 1% highest earning bloggers in the world & quite possibly the most important tip I could share with bloggers aspiring to reach the same level of success.

The organic search engine traffic shares are always great and considered to be very useful in terms of promoting the websites but the SEO tasks, based on experience are complex and in most cases very time-consuming.
Valuable information about Seo. I believe in seo as its very beneficial, there is a hard work and you need to keep patience too in this as its a long term solution but its not so costly as PPC and paid inclusion as well. thanks for such good post.
SEO and PPC are two separate games in my opinion. There are a lot of SEO players that never buy PPC ads so this $299 per year will simply get redistributed to other sites that sell links.thanks..
Hopefully you’ll give us a recap on everything that went on while in Fiji, great recommendations you gave Tony, Organic Seo is definitely the right approach in the past, in the present, and the future!!
Til then,
Jean

I agree completely about paid inclusion. It’s hopeless and no one should use it unless they really have a site that can stand on it’s own feet after it’s up in the ranking. And indeed, when Yahoo started fooling with it, was probably the last time I used their search engine.
Fiji with Tony Robbins, eh? That must have been a pretty amazing trip!
We MUCH prefer organic traffic as well. Paid search is a fair option if you’re just starting out, but you’d better be including SEO to pick up some of that natural traffic later.
Paid search is also a great way to test an idea, conversions, etc. as you can buy enough traffic to quickly see a statistically significant result for when your REAL seo kicks in.
