Photographically Motivated Tuesday – My New Town

Shaners wanted to see some pics from my new home so I thought I would leave off the music this week and show you a few snaps. Plus I didn’t get to post on Monday due tot my computer braking down!! It’s all fixed now though!

Cairo is awesome so far and I am finally settling in. My Vodafone ADSL line is going to be installed on Wednesday and hopefully I will have most of my bureaucratic stuff sorted by the end of this week too…. So back to the grind stone then!

Cairo is a great place to be a blogger. A new culture, lots of nice weather, laid back locals and a relatively cheap living standard. I purchased half a fridge full of veg for around $4 a few days ago!

The low living cost opens up the potential for me to risk trying new ideas and ventures as I do not HAVE to earn as much money as I did in other countries. Although I am always looking to bring in a little more each month.

I really really cannot wait to get back to working full time online. The break has refreshed me very nicely.

So onto the pics….

IMG_5951Cairo is constantly full of people… Once the sun has set over the Nile the streets downtown become packed solid!

IMG_5983People live absolutely everywhere, especially downtown. You can see that shanty towns have built up on the Cairo rooftops.

IMG_5989Capitalism has reached Egypt too! I thought this Policeman was running over to tell me to stop taking pics…. But he ran straight past me!

IMG_5995One of the local thugs! Thousands and thousands of these cats roam the streets. Some are well fed some are skin and bone but they all have a pretty wild and rough life.

IMG_6002Some more locals! Like cats, dogs roam wild. Mum is quite skinny but seems to be looking after her pups pretty well. The wild dogs are actually pretty friendly for the most part.

IMG_5997Ahhhh Maadi, this is my local area. Full of villa’s, palm trees, cool restaurants, plenty of shops and……..

IMG_6004…… Desert wasteland! This is the short cut from the local mall (Maadi Grand Mall) to my apartment block! I could take a nice palm lined street but the desert is pretty cool too! That lady is my partner Lara carrying a small fan that we just acquired :) .

I hope you enjoyed the pics and are ready to get some good stuff done this week on and offline.

Let me know how you are and what you have been up to.

Forest.

Funny, I was working on my photography course and suddenly felt like checking your blog – thank you for the pictures! It is very smart to live over there while you work on setting up an online business. It just doesn’t happen overnight for all of us (actually I hear it barely happens at all for most people) and it helps to have that extra economic margin. I seriously considered moving to Eastern Europe or Asia for the same reason recently – but decided to stay in the US for other reasons …

Best of luck, and I look forward to hearing more about Egypt in the future.

    • forest_parks (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

Hey Anna, It’s funny how stuff like that happens! I have a digital rebel xt (a few years old now) and I know it’s capable of some beautiful photography but I have not taken full advantage of it yet. I think a photography course would benefit me greatly.

Eastern Europe is cheap and some parts beautiful too. If you can deal with leaving friends and family then it makes sense but most people don’t like to do that!

One plus point about being in USA/UK whilst setting up your online business is that you can get a 2nd job a litte easier if you find yourself falling on hard times.

I have just started a blog about Cairo and that is more likely to be the place to hear about me and egypt :) . http://WelcomeToCairo.net.

Good luck, and welcome to Egyptian blogging.

    • forest_parks (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

      Hey Maryanne,

Your blog was one of the first blogs I read when the idea that my partner may study in Egypt came about…. So great to hear from you.

I have a blog more dedicated to my Egyptian Living over at http://WelcomeToCairo.com. It does not have much content yet but it will soon :)

      Thanks for stopping by.

Cairo is really awesome and the pics are really nice to watch.

  5. Web Career Girl (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

They are really interesting pictures! I would love to go there some time.

    • forest_parks (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

I would recommend visiting… I have not been to the Pyramids yet (waiting for it to cool down) but I can’t wait…. I would advise you bring a male friend or a few girlfriends though as it can be a little daunting for a Western female by herself.

If you don’t mind living on the cheap then you can get a reasonable hostel here for $10 a night. We stayed in one for 9 days and it was fine.

Wow it’s like just Philippines, looks like very tropical.

    • forest_parks (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

Yeah my area is quite tropical looking…. Some areas are much more desert and some areas more metropolitan. The city is a big mix up of everything!

I would love to see the Philippines one day.

  7. Nathaniel (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

Hey Forest, it’s been a while since I’ve visited, but I thought I would take a look at your Cairo sites and Cairo posts because of my new blog on traveling. I like the pics and the town, and I’ll be stopping in more often for some inspiration!

    • forest_parks (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

      Hey thanks :) ,

I’ll be back to blogging business soon here but will be talking about Cairo a few times a week on my Cairo blog. What’s the URL of your travel blog?

      • Nathaniel (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

Well I still kept it green-flamingo, maybe not the best domain name, but I started it over with a new theme and new niche, about travel, transportation, and a little autoblogging too. It seems to be working out well for me for the past few weeks.

        • Forest (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

Ahhh cool. I’ll come by and take a look :) .

  8. Mima (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

I also have plans to move to Egypt. Why did you choose Cairo and not Alex?
How’s housing there? Do you mind me asking whether you got a furnished apartment and for how much?
Feel free to add me on messenger. I am pretty familiar with the culture, and can help you if you want. :)

    • forest_parks (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

      Hey Mima,

That’s awesome. I am here in Cairo because my partner Lara is going to the American University of Cairo to study Women’s Studies…. So I just followed along.

      Alexandria look beautiful.

I use Gchat and skype. Gchat: forest.parks@gmail.com and skype forest_parks. I would be interested in any tips you have and maybe you may be interested in doing a guest post for my Cairo blog?

  9. Great to see your new digs! What an exciting time it must be for you. :)

    • forest_parks (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

Thanks, it really is. I absolutely can’t wait to see the pyramids.

  11. Poze Profesionale (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

Hi Forest thoase are beautiful pictures you have there. Still i heard from others (because i havent been there) there are some unpleasent views also, and unfortunatelly there are not so few . Can you please tell us how did you manage that part of Cairo?

    • forest_parks (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

      Hi Poze Profesionale,

Yes there are some awful bits that I have witnessed. Lots of extremely poor people which is really really sad. When you have a little girl literally hanging onto your leg begging for just a little money it breaks your heart. The sad fact is that I am not an extremely rich man and can’t help everyone at this stage :(

For me I try to help by buying local and giving money where I can. The harder parts of any city are something that I think everyone should expose themselves too. It’s also all of our responsibilities to do a little to help where we can. If everyone did help each other out then most of these problems would disappear!!

I REALLY need to get over my fear of flying, get out of “Mayberry” and get out and see the world!!! haha

    Great pics!

Thanks for stopping by my crazy blog!!!

    • Forest (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

Hey Jake… It is possible to take a few boats, although it may take you a while.

I’ve never been afraid of flying so this is easy for me to say but…. It’s much safer than being in a car, statistically anyway.

      Thanks for stopping by.

PS. Where in USA is Mayberry?

  17. Jake (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

Yeah… I dunno what I’m gonna do, but we’re flying to the tropics for our honeymoon so I’ve got like 9 months to prepare myself haha.. maybe after that I’ll be over my fear and can do more flying!

“Mayberry” is my hometown of Mt. Airy, NC Ever heard of “Andy Griffith” ?

    http://jakecpunut.com/2009/04/its-friday-and-mayberry-is-my-home-town/

    • forest_parks (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

Good luck for the honeymoon.. Hopefully post wedding elation will curb your fear!!

Hey Jake, never heard of Andy Griffith but went and read your post…. I’m English though so that’s maybe why I have never heard of him!

Looks like a nice town. I gre up in a place called Plumstead… It was horrible :) . I’m living in Cairo, Egypt right now and it’s mad but really cool.

      • forest_parks (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

Duh I was replying to comments too fast. Obviously you knew I lived in Cairo. I could have edited the comment but it’s better to leave mistakes out in the open…. The largest open face quarry in the world!! Must be beautifully ugly in reality.

  18. Brian D. Hawkins (Reply) on Monday 17, 2009

I enjoy the Cairo pictures. It’s been so long since I was there. Is Photographically Motivated Tuesday going to be a regular series? I was wondering if you have a Flickr account to? I would love to see more. Photography is a hobby for me and my favorite shots are of real life images rather than doctored up art.

I actually normally do a musically motivated monday but just changed it to photos and a tuesday for that week so people could see my new home!

Maybe I will make it more regular. I do have flikr but am updating it right now. Maybe I will link it if I get anything worthwhile up there.
