SEO Tips for Bloggers: Brilliant Blog Linking Strategy Part 1

Posted on 12. May, 2010 by in Blogging Tips, Traffic Generation, Tutorials

Brilliantjeni's happy happy Buddha Statue

I made so much money blogging this month, I was smiling like this too!

In my last post, I covered my “Blogging Keyword Strategy.” If you missed it, here’s a quick overview, but understand that to get the most from my backlinking strategy, you really need to read the full article and have already implemented the described keyword strategy.

Keyword Strategy Overview:

  • Create a list of related keywords to target using Micro Niche Finder (aff link)
  • Create a category for each keyword
  • Create a tag for each keyword
  • Write a pillar article for each keyword, using it as the title (no variations)
  • Write supporting articles for each keyword (keyword used with variations)
  • Link the supporting articles to the pillar articles using a plugin such as KB Linker

The next step: Backlinking for Bloggers.

One of the first things bloggers learn when starting out, is to get backlinks by commenting on other people’s blogs. Particularly with the help of plugins like Commenluv, this is an extremely effective approach with a bonus of being a great way to meet fellow bloggers. Since I know you all know this already, I won’t go into detail about it, and instead will focus on more advanced tactics.

Backlinking Tactic #1: Create your own link love using Twitter

Since every Blogger on the planet uses Twitter (and if you’re not, oi- START NOW) we’ll start here. Twitter is an easy, almost overly useful SEO opportunity. First, start by adding the Twitter Tools plugin by Alex King. Don’t use the tiny url co-plugin that now comes with this. We don’t want to tinyurl the tweets and hide the keywords we’ve so carefully used to name our blog posts. Alex has done a great job simplifying this setup, so just make sure yours is set to automatically tweet blog posts when they are published.

Once you’ve tested and are sure blog posts are showing on your specified Twitter account…

  1. Set up a facebook account where you’d like your posts to show. I opt to keep my blog posts on a specified fan or business page rather than on my personal fb page but this really depends on your own needs. Using a twitter app (I use Smart Twitter) link your fb and twitter accounts. Remember to test and make sure your tweeted blog posts are showing when you hit that magic publish button.
  2. Set up a Yahoo profile page (also, personal or one specifically for your site if appropriate.) Link your twitter account here so your twitter feed shows in the profile.
  3. Do this for as many sites as you would like. The more the better. FriendFeed is the most popular for this. Last I heard, FriendFeed was still “no follow” but we don’t care about that since the url’s will be showing “non tiny” and [BLOGGING TIP:] Google reads urls. (Google is so clever.)

I’ll list more of these sites at the bottom of this post, but feel free to share more in your comments.

For sites that don’t offer an automated Twitter-connect, grab your Twitter RSS and feed that to pages. Many will offer an easy option to add your RSS url. For those that don’t, if they happen to allow html, add your feed using a snippet that displays your RSS. For example, I use autoblogger (aff link) to publish one of a feed from my forums to a separate blog I also own. Not only does this drive traffic to the ad-monetized forums, but the feed pages actually rank higher than the forum pages because of the added SEO features wordpress offers. This works great for RSS exchange too; if you’ve got a blogging buddy with a similar site, you can use autoblogger to post to a specific category on their blog, automatically giving you backlinks for every post you publish and vice versa.

There are dozens of other ways to utilize this tactic but you get the idea. As you can see, using feeds and aggregators can really cut back your efforts of having to go around and place a link on sites individually. Ultimately, you can set this up so you are getting hundreds of keyword rich backlinks for every post you publish, and without an ounce of extra work. Here’s to blogging smarter, and not harder.

If you liked this post, subscribe to my RSS!

Next post- more brilliant backlinking strategy.

Try this on any of the following: Facebook, Yahoo, MySpace, WordPress, LiveJournal, Blogger, FeedBurner (duh, right?) blogger (you can actually do this from just about any hosted blog site), Friendster, LinkedIn, bebo, hi5, msn live…

Well, you know I despise backlinking one by one; so very tedious. I think twitter and feeds are really the best way to automate this without spamming blogs, forums, etc with your links.

Did you see what just happened with the email subscribe list? *Facepalms* but laughing!

My apologies everyone; I moved some of the posts from my previous blog over here, intending to drop them to a private category- instead they went public and piled up in the subscription system. Very sorry if you had to had to hit the delete button a few dozen times! If you were inconvenienced in any way, Forest will give you a cupcake. :)

Glad you found the post useful Horoz. I had serious server issues this week so I’m a bit behind on redesigns I’m doing but I’ll be posting others when they’re “pretty” again. I’m debating on whether or not to share my 2 most popular, as they’ve been hacked twice in the last year and I’m tempted to keep them quiet rather than call attention to them. Not sure what hackers get out of doing such things, but I have a fellow 6 figure blogger who recently lost his site empire to hackers who tarnished his name in the eyes of Google. :( We shall see what I decide to do in the future…

I have used Twitter Tools in past but after some problems, I deleted it. For now, I use dlvr.it for updates. It can fetch RSS feeds and send them to FB, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts. I love it because it simplifies the management job as I can control all of them from one place and then, it’s automatic!

I’m all for automatic! Sounds like this is a valid tip and solid thumbs up for that plugin. I definitely like that it hits up LinkedIn too; I’ll have to take a look at this one. Currently, I’ll run all blog feeds to Twitter and then grab the RSS feed from my Twitter timeline to feed elsewhere- that allows me to feed unlimited RSS feeds to the same place just through my timeline.

If multiple RSS isn’t needed though, and you’re just looking for social network profile updating, I have to say dlvr.it sounds like a great option.

Thank you for sharing Ishan! Hope you’ll do so regularly.

All this talk about rss feeds reminds me that I really should turn some of my websites into blogs to take advantage of things like this. Since I mostly market websites instead of blogs, rss feeds is not something that I am very familiar with. If it can automated backlinking, I’m all for it.

Thanks for this good information the only thing that I struggle with is not using the tiny url’s because most of the time you need to if you want people to be able to retweet the post. Using the full url most of the time makes the post then to long to be retweeted. How do over come this?
Mike J´s last blog ..3 Tasks For 2 Hours Per Day For Quick Link Building My ComLuv Profile

    • brilliantjeni 14 May 2010 at 11:16 pm #

Sometimes it can’t be helped but if you’re sticking to my keyword strategy in addition to this, your links will be shorter since you’re using mostly 2 and 3 word targeted keyword phrases for your titles. Not to worry if your titles are longer than this though; Google reads the words surrounding links as well.

      • Laptop Briefcases 4 June 2010 at 4:53 pm #

Yes ideally all of your urls are quite short. If your urls are too long, your important keywords might get diluted too much. This also emphasizes how important a short domain name is as well. If your domain name is quite long, it would be unlikely that any of your urls would effectively fit into a tweet.

  9. Jimvesting 15 May 2010 at 8:43 pm #

I think you had the right idea with this strategy, but it just falls apart for me at the actual execution. For your money, you’d be much better off going around and submitting articles to tons of different websites than trying to do it all yourself… this is a time consuming process that you have laid out and the benefits are only a few low quality links from twitter, yahoo and facebook. Writing tons of articles all day really is not suitable (in my opinion) as a legit expense of my time, so maybe if you advocated outsourcing all of your article writing this method starts to get a bit slicker. What do you think?

    • brilliantjeni 17 May 2010 at 3:08 pm #

Not sure we’re on the same page with this one Jim. Not sure if this was in reference to another post, but what article writing are you referring to? This strategy doesn’t have anything to do with writing articles or manual submissions of links or any other kind; It’s merely a tactic for using Twitter to automate backlinks when a new post is written.

      1. Setup Twitter account.
      2. Create accounts on social nets that publish twitter timelines, or RSS feeds.
      3. Feed blog into twitter timeline.
      4. New posts go out to twitter, and then to other designated sites, creating backlinks without having to go to each of those sites and post it manually.

All that aside; I’d agree that time can be better spent elsewhere than writing articles all day. You’ll find that all of my blogging strategies are designed around the idea of passive income. :)

        Jeni,

Short of having you do this for us – can you suggest any directories etc., that publish Twitter timelines? I saw what Karo did by linking to

        Facebook
        Friendfeed
        Yahoo
        Bebo
        Msnlive
        LinkedIn

But honestly, there has to be an easier way! :-)

    Hello Jeni,

You know i have been expecting this post and i have been checking my email expecting an update but i didn’t get any, now i know i didn’t subscribe to your RSS but i have done that now

You know what i was expecting about your backlinking strategy was far different from what i read. And this is new to me since i am not crazy about social networks. But as long as it works and builds the links, i will do it. At least that will really free up some good hours for me that i have been using to search for backlinks.

Are you saying that once we have interconnected most social networks to display our feeds we don’t have to bother looking for other forms of links? And we will do fine at the search engines?

You know that backlink varies and the higher weigh link is if a related high quality site is linking to you, which i must say is difficult to get especially if you are not a Big name yet in your niche(with low traffic) Are you suggesting that as long as we have a good interconnected networks displaying out feeds we could be getting enough backlinks good for ranking?

You also said we can use wordpress and blogger, you mean we just set a profile with them and not a blog right?

Please clear this up for me, meanwhile i will start working this strategy up

I am really interested in the Autoblogger plugin but it is quite expensive for someone who hasn’t made a dime from blogging. I wish i had the money to spare for it. But i’ll save for it and eventually buy it.

Thank you for a wonderful post and for sharing. And i’m happy for you that you made lots of money last month blogging, that’s still a dream for me. I hope with your strategies that i am following i can start seeing success in the near future

    • brilliantjeni 20 July 2010 at 3:27 am #

Hi there Karo- I’m honored that you are always eager for a new post, and my apologies for the wait. Busy moving back to the states and switching hosting companies and servers after a severe GoDaddy mistake, but back on track now.

This particular strategy is not my only approach to backlinking by any means. It’s merely one trick I use and expand on. Once you have a good RSS setup for these things, it’s simple to plug that feed into relative sites across the web. Even setting up a free blog, using Blogger.com and dropping the RSS there, along with some relative content- easy automated backlinks.

As for other links- YES, it’s an ongoing process, getting backlinks but what I suggest rather than going around plowing away and leaving backlinks yourself, is automating this process as much as possible too. For example, make it easy for people to create reciprocal links to your own blog when they visit. There are wordpress plugins for this although I’m waiting for an ideal one to be developed. Even better than this, come up with posts that will rightly EARN backlinks from relative sites on their own. If you have a solid resource post up, with stats, etc and it’s well-written and valuable to readers, you can bet other publishers will be linking back to that page on their own. This adds up, believe me.

Interesting that you mentioned you are not into social networking. I would highly suggest at least focusing on utilizing Twitter and Facebook and watch your Analytics stats from these two as referrals. You’d be surprised how much traffic these sites can bring.

  15. Karo 23 May 2010 at 2:55 am #

Since i read this post i have worked accordingly. Signing to several social sites and linking my twitter account to them.

My twitter is now linked to:
    Facebook
    Friendfeed
    Yahoo
    Bebo
    Msnlive
    LinkedIn

I also signed on to Hi5, Friendster and myspace but i couldn’t find a way to link my twitter to them so i ignored them. Any advice here?

My major concern now is that after making a post on my blog, i logged on to twitter to confirm that i have created some link love but i was surprised and confused when i realized that the post was displayed but the URL used was bit.ly. And i didn’t activate the bit.ly tool that came with it the twitter tool, so now i really don’t understand.

Please i need your help, if it doesn’t display my blog URL, it meams this link building strategy becomes useless, right?

I am longing to hear from you

You have a few options for sites that don’t have an easy “add your RSS here” feature. MySpace for instance, you can add html code to display your Twitter RSS directly to the free blog there.

As for bit.ly- do you by chance have another plugin enabled that applies bit.ly to your links?

  16. Laptop Briefcases 25 May 2010 at 7:18 pm #

This sounds like a good strategy to try out. I have been spending far too much time running around chasing individual links. I have picked up some automated strategies, but anything I can add to the mix is sure to help. I’ve been avoiding blogging, but I guess if I hire someone to write the posts for me, I could setup a few blogs.

Some others ways to get backlings are to create a google profile and put the url of your blog there, additionally making youtube videos is always a good idea because you can add your url next to each video you create (nofollow links) and get some traffic, you can also get a dofollow link in youtube if you add your url to your youtube profile…
