Take Your First Step In Leveraging Your Social Network
Posted on 05. Aug, 2008 by Benjamin Patton in Blogging Tips
Yesterday I exposed the leading social networks that are booming with popularity right this minute. While I may have a profile in each one I may leverage one of them more than the others based on a few different factors. Do not fret if you are not a member or are not actively exploiting one of these to your own means just yet. Quantity has never been quality. If you already have a favorite and a fan base within any of these I highly recommend you stick with it through this series and just reinforce what you are already doing. Never be afraid to explore new networks as you become more comfortable with the ones you are using.
The over all goal is to first set out on a mission to obtain fans and friends organically. People who like what you are submitting or like what you vote up on within that given network. These people who find you are more likely to adhere to the reciprocity clause which can make or break you in terms of social success. The idea that I love about social networking most is the ability to put quality day changing content in front of readers who may have never even thought of looking for it. These types of folks are likely to sign up and follow you relentlessly. This spills over to your blog, site, or product and not just your social profile. Lets take a look at how to build a strong social profile to back up your blog’s content.
The largest factor when building a network from scratch is to actively participate in your community. Start with your niche and then go up. Depending on what it is you want to promote you will find many crossovers into other subject material. Generally when first starting out it can be a bit slow as is everything done right and from scratch.
The best way to start this process is when you are trying to add people to your network sending out invites and what not. Make sure to never use the default message when inviting. Remember the reoccurring theme that people may never remember what you say, but will always remember how you made them feel? This applies here. While you may be in contact with people quite randomly you will want to make sure that they remember you. Personalize your invite messages and change them between invites if you can stand it. I have already started doing this and have seen great measurable results.
Keep in mind the larger your network gets the easier it will be to expand it. Keep in touch and drop lines to these folks as over time people will fall out and stop promoting your content. A good friend is friendly keep that in mind. While this may become nearly impossible if your lucky enough to gather a large network still try. As well as keeping in touch stay active promoting others as active users like active users, of course this is not brain science so do your part of the reciprocity equation.
Building a decent sized social network takes time. I would encourage you to start by adding 1-2 active users every day. After a week or so try to start sending content shouts out to them and see what happens. If they like what you have start dissecting their network if possible and sending invites accordingly. Odds are if they are enjoying what you have to shout about, their readers will to.
If you can do this with the leading networks you will be able to put your content in front of many more eyes than you would normally be able to. While this should not be your primary concern for driving traffic it can be a very strong tool to leverage on your best posts. Something I will recommend and from personal experience is to NOT submit your own content to these networks. This with some will get you banned and well you can see how that will not help you. Make sure your not over submitting as this can with some of the networks take away from your “karma” or “power”. I generally try to submit articles maybe even different ones to different networks on a weekly schedule. This will spread out your exposure between networks and work in your favor.
Tomorrow we will see how by adding micro blogging into the mix that you can tap yet another funnel of traffic and readers. We are building up to a finale where we bring together all these elements successfully to bring content, readers and success to your blog, site, or products.
I am curios to any other methods being used with these social networks to gain a better success standard day in and day out. If you tend to approach things differently I would be interested in hearing from you in the comments section today.

Good stuff as usual Ben, I think the major thing is not to get overwhelmed with the various networks. Many try to go all out on everyone and end up ruining their network.
Slow and steady works wonders, and being involved is key.

That’s a prety good post Ben. I like the notion that you recommended adding just 1-2 friends per day. I think that is really important. I’m no good at social networking because I have no patience to add friends on a consistent basis so I never get that authority that is needed to drive hits, haha. However, if you do manage to get it… it’ll be worth your time
