It’s that time again, and with a new update released you will find yourself upgrading your wordpress blog sooner rather than later. This for some of us is a very difficult process because while we are trying to overwrite wordpress files it will make some pretty big errors at the top of the page. To our rescue is some super nice plugins which makes our upgrading process as easy as possible. Follow these simple steps and you too can be enjoying the latest and greatest that the worlds best blogging platform has to offer.

If You follow these steps below you can make the upgrade as easy as possible. I will also be adding these outstanding plugins to the bloggers tool box as these make the job a no brainer.

  • Just install these: WP-DBManager and Wordpress Instant Upgrade Plugins.

  • Go to Database to Back up your files.

  • Next deactivate your entire Plugins except WP-DB manager and Instant

    Upgrade Plugins.

  • Next go Manage tab and Click Instant Upgrade. And start your Upgrade process!

If everything goes as it should and the version you upgrading to is stable then you are done, if you encounter any errors roll back to your backup’s for now and report what happened to the wordpress forums. For most of us though this will make the upgrade process seamless and smooth with the least amount of hassle which is the best anyone could hope for.

As a side note to upgrading wordpress I usually give it a few days for people to publicize any critical security issues or flaws. As we saw with 2.5 and the users problems it may not be wise to uprade as soon as possible. I recommend waiting about three days to see what happens. If everyone you know is satisfied about the new version then by all means have at it. Make sure you have a day of backup of your sql db, directory content and structure as well as your posts exported. Make sure these are not located on your server for the worst case scenario which you should always be prepared for anyway. If you do this than you can pocket that $50-$100 which many people will charge to upgrade your blog for you. If you still aren’t comfortable being under the gun in case something happens then by all means have someone else more experienced take care of it.

Good Luck!

**Edit**

I just used these two plugins to perform the update for BenjaminPatton.com and I have to say the update itself took about 10 seconds! I ran a complete directory backup of my whole host as well as a sql db export and that took longer than the upgrade itself! 10/10 for these 2 plugins!

Very nice. I prefer to do upgrades myself, but I’m sure the auto upgrade is worth it’s weight (sort of) in gold for some people. I would also reccomend using wp-db-backup rather than manager for backups; because it has more functionality, and can email you backups daily, which is a massive bonus for people like me with no time to download them ;)

This New DB Plugin I am running with for this does everything the previous one we used does it can mail them store localy or allow you to download them. It also has a db repair feature as well as a db optimization function. Overall a little more powerful than the last DB plugin I had loaded. Either works to get the job done though.

    I haven’t upgraded to 2.6 yet.

I usually like to wait a bit, until all the bugs are sorted out and what not.

It sounds like you’re creating problems yourself by trying to solve this issue instead of looking at why their is a problem in the first place.
