What is Backlinking?

Backlinking is the process of acquiring incoming links to your site from other sites across the web. When done strategically, backlinking can help move your site up in the ranks, as each backlink to your site counts as a “vote” in the eyes of most search engines. Get enough votes, and your site is deemed a valuable resource and moved up in the ranks.
Smart backlinking, done well, can save you from spinning your tires in the mud and I’ll explain why. 100 links to your site that actually appear as “click here” are going to tell Google you have votes for your value with the phrase “click here.” Well obviously there are billions of “click here” links out there so this doesn’t really help you.
Instead, you want anchored backlinks. Anchored backlinks are links that read the keywords you are targeting, giving you “votes” for those keywords. This is an example of an anchored link:

Now if that link were to appear across 5000 pages, combined with other SEO factors, I’d more than likely be ranked #1 for the keyword phrase “blogging tips.”

Heh, i remember when i was confused about the difference between backlinking and just linking. Took me about a month to figure out there wasn’t a difference!

Really simple tip, but I seeing it being missed on almost every website that I visit! It is also important to make sure we are not just building links using one anchor text though because this might seem unnatural to Google.

Anchor text backlinks. is the most important factor in ranking for a keyword. Try to get as many backlinks as you can but do not use the same anchor text. Google seems to think it is dubious when every site that links to you use the same keyword.

You can also link with images. As long as you use your keywords in alt tags it will help you towards that keyword.
I’ve always assumed that image links were worth a little less than text links. Sure you can add some keyword relevance with things like alt text, but it still would likely count for less.

Ever since I drop backlink tasks, my page rank drop. However, I have been focusing on content and keywords. Google has change their algorithm almost everyday. To me, backlinks is no longer the most important things to worry about.
It’s your content and uniqueness.

I had tried getting backlinks from wiki and got few links from it several months back. but recently haven’t tried with it and yea blog commenting is easiest and best way to gain quick backlinks.

@hottest deals, while it may be a good idea to get links from wikipedia, especially if that page is really popular, the biggest problem that I have found is that they are very strict, about the links that can appear on the wikipedia pages. Now… some wiki pages are easier to get a link from, but I’ve also ran across some very strict wiki mods who kept deleting my link.

Backlinks are key to Seo. It is an art I think.
That’s an interesting point there about Wiki. Of course blog comments will get you the links but the Wiki idea got me thinking now.

@used tires does that really work. I have had to know out wiki b4 and it can be a pain to beat them in the ranks. But if you could gain from it that would be cool.
This is a great post, but it does not yield some of the out-of-the-box issues. This type of strategy is very expensive to take on from a client’s point of view. Considerable research must be conducted and in many cases, money has to be paid for quality ‘under-the-radar’ links.

Great info, backlinks with anchor text are one of the best ways to rank for that keyword. You have to build backlinks naturally though and not all at once. unnatural linkbuilding can raise a flag on the search engines.

It is important to understand a “dofollow” link versus a “nofollow” link. While I am talking about nofollow how come the attribute has been applied to this site? A couple of weeks ago I was sure it was a dofollow blog?
