What's Up With FeedBurner Feed Count?

It would be a sad day for any blogger when one of the first things they see on the Internet is that your personal blog subscriber count has taken a major hit. In the last few days my numbers were down more than 50% yesterday. I checked around, and while there are not to many blogs that I keep tabs on their subscriber numbers, some of the ones that I do keep tabs on seem to have taken a hit too.
I know that this is not the first time that Feed Burner has had this problem. A quick check of yesterday’s and today’s subscriber information reveals that this glitch has happened before in May this year. The cause: Google Feedfetcher numbers suddenly disappearing. FeedBurner appears to be a bit of an enabler in their explanation last year:
Specific subscriber stats from Google Feedfetcher were offline because this service was apparently out late with friends on Friday night, and well, it completely slept through Saturday. It appears to have rallied, however, and amid firm declarations of “I’m never doing that againâ€, Feedfetcher has started diligently reporting subscriber numbers to us, early this morning Pacific Time.
Sure… Well whatever the problem was then, the glitch recurred again here recently but with a new twist of going almost 50% over what I had to start with in the form of RSS Subs. This time it took a bit longer to correct for some feeds than others. But if the problem is the same this time things should return to normal in the next day or two. Honestly since google owns feedburner I wish that they would go through the code and process which feedburner is using and give it a much needed tune up. That would be easy, but if it is infact a resource problem, as feedburner at least for my site is not 100% live and up to date this would present a different problem. Maybe not even really being able to be patched without losing usability.
I’m still pretty surprised that of all the services that could fail and throw off a subscriber count, it always seems to be the one service that you’d expect to be really well integrated into FeedBurner. I have also noticed my email subs to be off in the overview but dead on in the break down. I am not 100% sure about this but have sent an email to the proper folks asking just how this aspect works.
The good news: FeedBurner lets you see all time stats again, which was apparently disabled for a few days there. The bad news: these dips will stay in your all time stats report:

And the best news of all: no, you didn’t offend massive numbers of your readers yesterday; they should be “back†tomorrow. And don’t worry, your readers using Google Reader will still see your posts. Now What I am curious about is whether or not I actually am 100+ RSS Subs, because if so it is time for a contest and a party. Let’s see if it lasts through the weekend.
How are your RSS numbers doing lately? And how does your history look, does yours suffer from the inverted spikes or even just normal spikes? It will be interesting to know exactly how this looks across the blogosphere.

Man, I have had so many different “outages” with feedburner. Sometimes I’ll check it and all my feeds show zero!
And it fluctuates…not just the normal fluctuation, but, I’ve had drastic changes….I don’t know, we’ll see how it plays out.

If anything it should be interesting to watch until it works itself back out to normal
I find at various times of the day it is all over the place. It usually takes all morning to kick in with a half decent and accurate number. I tends to job around a lot though.

This happens to me all the time. I thought it was just me. Glad to know it isn’t!
This regularly happens with one of my blog. Sometimes Feedburner shows 300+ readers and sometimes a big fat 0. How is it possible? I have no idea. Well, on this blog of mine, it is stable. BTW, this is my first visit to your blog. I think, I’ll come back to read your interesting posts. Thanks.

Sometimes it’s not Feedburners fault at all. I have had my server that my blog is hosted on crash for a short time (30 mins or so) right when Feedburner is pulling numbers. It seems that the time that most servers do repair work, backups and things of that nature is also prime time Feedburner updating hours. It makes sense why both would be at an undesirable time.
Perhaps if your count is going down, it’s your server. If theres a downed website and Feedburner is trying to see your feed count, it’s going to be 0 or a lower number.

@The Net Fool – wow, I never knew that one! That makes sense too….hmmm….I’ve had a few “zero day” feeds before….
@EarnBlogger Im happy to hear you are finding some helpful content. And I am most certainly very happy you plan to come back thanks!
@TheNetFool Definately a possibility or timing out but I do use the feedburner email deal so when you click your going straight to their site I do not use the wordpress feed stuffs mostly since it will end up giving you an inaccurate count. It seems this is regular as “hicup” so to speak.
I am going to subscribe to an uptime monitor now as you were saying they are doing updates during the same time serverbackups are being made, etc.
I noticed a huge dip in my Feedburner count this week. My count went down by more than 50%. When I log in to my account it shows more readers that are showing on my blog. I tried changing out the widget and it still didn’t help.

It seems to be an inherent problem or issue internal to the feedburner network or process that comes up with the number as my situation is mirroring yours. Except that now I seem to have a steady 125+ rss subs! Im not complaining by any means though
well, It’s nice to see I am not alone. Today my subscriber count is 0. Zero. As in zip, zero, zilch. Really I have a whopping 42, that’s what my count shows on my blog.
Hope things get back to normal or I guess my blog will start showing 0. Ooh, harsh.
